Training on Women, Children, PwDs, and LGBTQI+ Sensitive Reporting in Media
August 27th, 2025

Funded by the European Union and supported by Helvetas Bhutan, the Bhutan Media Foundation conducted a two-day training on “Women, Children, PwDs, and LGBTQ+ Sensitive Reporting in Media” on 25–26 August 2025 in Paro. The training brought together 21 journalists, reporters, editors, and freelancers from across the country to strengthen ethical and inclusive media reporting on marginalized and vulnerable groups.
Day 1 – Understanding Rights, Policies, and Inclusive Reporting:
Participants explored the legal and policy frameworks protecting women, children, and persons with disabilities in Bhutan, including the Child Care and Protection Act, Domestic Violence Prevention Act, and National Gender Equality Policy. Sessions emphasized the media’s role in accountability and awareness-raising, responsible reporting practices, and rights-based narratives. Practical guidance was provided on avoiding stereotypes, safeguarding dignity, and promoting accurate, empathetic portrayals of marginalized groups.
Day 2 – LGBTQ+ Sensitivity and Ethical Storytelling:
The second day focused on LGBTQ+ issues, inclusive journalism, and responsible storytelling. Participants learned about the SOGIESC framework, challenges faced by LGBTQ+ communities, and ethical media practices such as trauma-informed reporting, respectful language, and consent. Sessions highlighted family empowerment, community resilience, and solution-oriented reporting, encouraging journalists to frame stories in ways that reduce stigma and promote inclusion.
