July 16th, 2025

Funded by the European Union and supported by Helvetas Bhutan under the project: “CSOs as Actors in Governance and Development”.
The Bhutan Media Foundation successfully conducted a two-day Sensitization Workshop on Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) for media professionals from July 14–15, 2025, in Paro. The workshop brought together 22 journalists, freelancers, and social media influencers from across the country to explore the intersection of media and civil society in Bhutan and to build stronger, more informed engagement between the two sectors.
July 14 – Day 1 introduced participants to the evolution, roles, and legal frameworks of CSOs and CBOs in Bhutan, highlighting their contributions to national development and democratic governance. Speakers from the Civil Society Organizations Authority, Tarayana Foundation, and Handicraft Association of Bhutan emphasized the importance of accurate, ethical, and balanced media narratives. The day also featured an inspiring session by the founder of the Bhutan Kidney Foundation, who shared how media partnerships have amplified the foundation’s public health advocacy.
July 15 – Day 2, sessions focused on the power of digital media, ethical reporting, and engaging CSOs as reliable sources. Influencer Namgay Zam and research consultant Samten Wangchuk offered practical insights into civic storytelling and responsible journalism, while a grassroots entrepreneur from Chukha illustrated the potential of amplifying community voices through media-CSO collaboration.
The workshop concluded with the announcement of the CSO & CBO Publication Fees, an opportunity for the 22 participants to submit follow-up stories and receive financial support for civic journalism.
