While serving voluntary ‘zhabtog’ in Gelephu Mindfulness City, on October 9, 2025, the Bhutan Media Foundation team visited EDI Community RADIO.

Established in 2015 by Tarayana Foundation, with support from the Royal Government and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the Edi Community Radio stands as the only sustaining community radio station in Bhutan. During the visit, we met with Mr. Jambay Tshering, Manager and Programme Producer.

Community media represent a vital third tier of Bhutan’s media landscape, complementing public and private outlets, and play an essential role in giving communities a platform to voice local concerns, access information, and engage in civic participation. The radio station broadcasts in local dialects such as Khengkha, Tshangla, and Lhotsham, serving as a guardian of indigenous languages while preserving and promoting folk music, culture, and traditions. It also fosters dialogue on local issues, providing a space for collective problem-solving.

Despite challenges such as limited funding, insufficient community support, and capacity-building needs, Mr. Jambay Tshering remains deeply committed to strengthening the station’s role in community engagement.
