Training of Trainers on Media and Information Literacy (MIL) for School Counsellors

The five-day Training of Trainers on Media and Information Literacy (MIL) for School Counsellors, held in Punakha, has been successfully completed. Organized from 26 – 30 January 2026, 25 school counsellors from across Bhutan participated in this intensive programme, strengthening their capacity to promote responsible media engagement, critical information practices, and the ethical use of emerging technologies within schools and communities.
During the closing programme, Mr. Sonam Penjor, Director, Department of Media, Creative Industry & Intellectual Property (DoMCIIP), graced the certificate awarding ceremony. He underscored the importance of media literacy in todayโs media-saturated society and highlighted the pivotal role school counsellors play in promoting MIL in both their personal and professional capacities.
As part of the training, participants developed and presented MIL Action Plans, laying strong foundations to cascade their knowledge and skills within their respective schools and communities.
Organized by the Bhutan Media Foundation (BMF) with support from the Department of Media, Creative Industry & Intellectual Property (DoMCIIP) through Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) funding, and in collaboration with the Department of Education Programmes, MOESD, the training covered key areas including media and media messages, social media and emerging challenges, fact-checking, news fundamentals, Generative AI, media laws and policies, and MIL facilitation skills.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Sonam Penjor, Director, DoMCIIP, for gracing the closing event, delivering the keynote address, and supporting this important initiative. We also thank DEP, MOESD for facilitating the participation of school counsellors. Special appreciation goes to all facilitators: Prof. (Dr.) Anubhuti Yadav (IIMC, New Delhi), Mr. Phub Dorji (Nyingnor Data), Mr. Needrup Zangpo, and Mr. Sangay Tenzin (DoMCIIP) for their valuable contributions.
This Training of Trainers has established a National Network of MIL Trainers, who will serve as trainers and focal persons, advancing MIL across Bhutanโs schools and communities.
