16th Foundation Day of Bhutan Media Foundation

On 21 February 2026, the Bhutan Media Foundation (BMF)commemorated its 16th Foundation Day in Thimphu, coinciding with the 46th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty The King.
Established under a Royal Charter granted by His Majesty The King on 21 February 2010, BMF was founded to strengthen a free, independent, and responsible media in Bhutan. Registered as a Public Benefit Organization with the CSO Authority since April 2015, the Foundation works to enhance media professionalism, advance Media and Information Literacy (MIL), support policy advocacy, and foster civic engagement.
Marking 16 years of service is a significant milestone, reflecting BMFโs journey from a Royal initiative to a key institution within Bhutanโs media and civil society landscape. The day began with the BMF team offering butter lamps and prayers at the Memorial Chorten for the long life of His Majesty The King and for the continued success of the Foundation.
In the evening, a modest celebration was held with media professionals, development partners, and civil society representatives. The programme included a brief presentation highlighting BMFโs journey and achievements over the years, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony and dinner.
As we mark this important milestone, we renew our commitment to advancing a professional, responsible, and independent media in Bhutan.
